How to Install Pre-Pasted Wallpaper

Welcome! Installing pre-pasted wallpaper yourself is manageable with the right prep and care. Follow these steps for a clean, professional finish.

1. Inspect & Prep the Wall

Before you start, ensure your wall is ready:

  • Make sure the wall is clean, dry, smooth, and free of dust, grease, or loose paint.

  • If the wall has texture or imperfections, either sand them down or apply a wallpaper liner (also called lining paper) to even out the surface.

  • Remove any old wallpaper, nails, or adhesives.

  • If your wall has fresh paint, wait at least 4 weeks before applying wallpaper to allow it to fully cure.

  • Apply a primer or wallcovering sealer (except on freshly painted walls). A universal primer helps with adhesion and easier cleanup.

Tip: Don’t skip this step — skipping wall prep is the most common cause of bubbling, peeling, and alignment problems later on.

2. Gather Your Tools & Materials

Having everything on hand before you begin saves frustration mid-project. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pre-pasted wallpaper rolls

  • Measuring tape / ruler

  • Pencil

  • Level or plumb line

  • Scissors / sharp utility knife with spare blades

  • Straightedge or ruler

  • Ladder or step stool

  • Sponge and clean bucket of water

  • Drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect floors

  • Smoothing tool (plastic roller or wallpaper brush)

  • Clean rag or lint-free cloth

Also, wear comfortable clothes (or an apron) with pockets so you can keep small tools handy.

3. Measure & Cut Your Strips

Prepare your wallpaper strips before applying:

  1. Measure the height of the wall from ceiling to baseboard (or floor) in multiple spots.

  2. Add 2–3 cm (≈ 1 in) extra to the top and bottom of each strip — this gives margin for trimming and adjustment.

  3. When multiple strips are required, match the pattern: find where the design aligns and cut the next strip so the design continues seamlessly.

  4. It’s often easier to cut all your strips ahead of time (assuming your walls are of uniform height) than cutting as you go.

4. Activate the Adhesive (Paste)

Pre-pasted wallpaper has dry adhesive that needs to be moistened. Follow these steps:

  • Submerge (or float) the wallpaper panel, glue side down, into a shallow tray of water for about 10–15 seconds (check manufacturer’s instructions).

  • Carefully lift the panel, letting excess water drain off.

  • Lay the panel, adhesive side up, on a flat, clean surface (e.g. a table or the floor) to “book” it.

5. “Book” the Wallpaper

Booking allows the adhesive to activate uniformly while giving you a foldable panel:

  • Fold the paper in half, glue-to-glue, so the pasted surfaces touch (do not crease or crimp the paper).

  • Leave it folded for about 60 seconds (or as directed by the manufacturer).

  • This ensures the paste fully activates and adheres more evenly when hung.

6. Hang the First Strip

This is the most critical strip—you want it absolutely true:

  1. Unfold the top half of the panel, exposing the adhesive.

  2. Align the top, leaving about 2–3 cm (1 in) extra at top and bottom for trimming later.

  3. Use your plumb line or level to make sure the strip is perfectly vertical.

  4. Gently press the strip to the wall.

7. Smooth & Adhere

Once the panel is on the wall:

  • From top to bottom, smooth it out using your smoothing tool or brush, working outward from the center to push out air bubbles.

  • Use a damp (not thoroughly wet) sponge or cloth to assist—but don’t oversaturate.

  • Small bubbles often disappear as the adhesive cures, but large ones should be smoothed immediately or carefully lifted and repressed.

8. Trim the Edges

After smoothing:

  • Use a sharp utility knife with a new blade to cleanly trim the excess at the top, bottom, and edges (wall corners, around switches/sockets).

  • Use a straightedge or ruler to guide your cut and avoid jagged edges.

9. Continue with Additional Strips

With the first strip in place:

  • Book, align, and hang the next strip, making sure the pattern lines up perfectly at the joins.

  • Butt the edges tightly (but avoid overlapping unless the product recommends overlap).

  • Smooth seams with the same method.

  • Clean off any stray adhesive immediately as you work — warm water and a damp sponge work well.

Once two strips are up, step back and inspect for misalignment or mistakes. It’s easier to correct early than after many strips are hung.

10. Final Cleanup & Care

After installation is completed:

  • Let the wallpaper dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated room (often 24–48 hours).

  • Clean gently with a damp sponge (mild soap if needed) — do not scrub or use abrasive materials.

  • Avoid getting the seams too wet.

  • Some stains (especially oil/grease) may be difficult to remove — test cleaning gently first.

  • Avoid slamming doors or heavy impact near seams until fully cured.
